A state of emergencyhi
ive brought about this topic as i am quite worried about the current government situation in thailand. As i will be there in 4 weeks and i read in the local paper today that a state of emergency has been put into force until november 30, could anyone who is well up on politics expand on this?. I might also come straight down to pattaya as was going to stay in bkk for on night when i land but as the current situation is alittle unstable might give it a miss. Can enyone expand on the current situation and re assure me that i will be able to safley travel to thailand early october as ive heard they might be stopping tourist transit all together, while these problems exist.

News WatchHi Jim... I understand that you are worried.
All I can say is: Watch the news !
UKBKK´s admin has created some informative stuff for us on the board.
First there is an RSS news watch at the new portal:
http://ukbkk.co.uk/forum/index.php?
Some more links and texts can be found in Thai News in the forum section:
http://ukbkk.co.uk/forum/index.php?showforum=37
Both can be viewed without logging in as a member.
If I would be you, I wouldn´t cancel my booking ( ...unless the situation overthere would turn into a full scale civil war )... but I would definitely give Bangkok a miss !
Hope that things will get better for my next trip in six months from now.
But I guess, when things have calmed down in coming March, I have to face another problem overthere too often:

Calm down guys!If it wasn't for the TV and Media, we would know nothing about the situation down here in Pattaya. In fact, I would guess that nowhere on Sukumvit would feel any different
The package travel guys and residential sale will be having a tough time - but I think the average independent whore monger won't be affected at all.
Jim, you are more likely to be banged up in Dubai for getting pissed and trying to chat up some Arab Prince's daughter.
I think the trouble last night was deliberate - Samak wanted an excuse to get more control so they shipped in some trouble makers from their own people.
Now Samak has all the power, but he is so incompetent that he won't be able to do anything useful with it. He has no support because the whole lot of them are going to get fired soon anyway - the Electoral commission is now presenting cases for almost all the parties in the coalition to be dissolved (with political bans for their leaders).
The problem is that they are trying to recoup the money they spent to get elected - but PAD is intervening all the time and so they haven't placed any orders (so they can get their 40%)
This is about the traditional Pigs making sure that Toxin is never allowed back to the trough again - thus ensuring that they don't get any competition whilst they line their own pockets.
Probably get closed down now!

thanks pete for the words of wisdom
Im going to be keeping a very low profile when travelling to thailand this time its sort of a standing joke between my friends that i never am able to get there wihout at least one hiccup. Lets just hope it sorts its self out as fast as the toxin coup did last year.

PeterP... Thanks for your informations about the situation in Pattaya.
Good to know that the unrest has not reached Soi 7 and that it will probably will never reach there...
JimmyMac... Go ahead with your plannings for your next trip ! Give Bangkok a miss and get yourself and your friends down to Pattaya soon after your arrival at the swamp.
