"Just curious and was wondering how the girls actually come to the bars, are there other people out looking, do they come themselves to the bars,
from their friends, do you advertise?"

Over the years we have done almost all of these - except advertise.

There are peope who appear sometimes who claim to be able to procure girls. We used a couple a few years ago. You pay them a finders fee (we insisted on staging the payments) and they use their contacts to find the girls. They tend to be ex-bar owners or mamasans who have a network of relationships that they built up. It worked but with very mixed results.

There were also people who claimed to procure girls from Cambodia or Laos, they would have dodgy ID's and would effectively be indentured. We steered well clear of this - it was all very close to Human Trafficing. But some bars did use them.

Another twist was an out of work mamasan who would bring a few girls with them. Again, we did this once, and got one excellect girl

. The trouble was (obviously) that when you fell out with the mamasan, you lost the girls!

In the early days Anna herself was a magnet, she was attractive and fun, so lots of girls felt that they too would be successful working with her. this was how we crewed our first bar in Soi 2. We used to go around bars (but not in Soi 2 - we never recruit from neighbouring bars) and Anna would chat to the girls. Frankly, this was seldom successful. I've tried the same, the girls are always flattered, promise to come and then don't show up.

I know a few guys still kid themselves that this will work - it does have the merit of proving an excuse to tour the bars and chat to the girls rather than focusing on your own bar!

I even know guys who have hung around the bus stops coming off Sukhumvit looking for hopefuls newly arriving in town.

Nowadays it tends to be some walk-ins and a lot of friends/relatives of girls who work, or worked for us. Our village is a particularly good source - a number of girls from the village have found long term Western partners - and they are scattered around North America and Europe. Even more now have re-built houses and radically changed their family's circumstances by working at AJ - so others come.

Around 3 years ago we went through a critical stage in the bar's life - we stopped being scared of our girls. I know that sounds crazy - but I'm convinced that this is a "watershed" in the life of a bar. In most bars the girls actually run the bar - the owners are so concerned about finding and keeping girls that they will put up with lousy, lazy girls who steal, harass, turn-up when they feel like it and generally treat their Bar simply as a convenient spot to hang out.

3 years ago we got rid of our freelancers, (we still have some freelancers - but they are all ex-salaried girls) changed our payment structures and began to insist upon performance. We have clear standards - and there are many girls in the Soi 7/8 area that are scared of working at AJ. They know that they make good money, have fun and find long term boyfriends - but that we make them work hard to do this.

Interesting little insight there Peter. Also understand the point about the girls “running” the bar seen it in so many places where a prima Donna seems to dictate to the other girls who will go with who etc. Twisted Evil

Just hope the girls understand that Monty will not be re-roofing any houses in Issan any time soon. Laughing

peter this made interesting reading and i respect your honesty in stating the truth. as i have frequented your bar on several occassions and watched anna with the girls as i believe she is a role model for them and a successful one at that in a crazy town like pattaya a bar like yours provides a safe and valuble stable place off work. possibility of a protective enviroment as most you customers become regulars. just as we all wish to work somwhere where we are happy i have also noticed your staff take care off each other i sometime buy the less attractive girls a drink and so do many other of your clientele. these girls are aware they are not going to be barfind but know you drink there often and appreciate the family atmosphere. happy days
