Peter, Important Info WantedProposed Bar Closures 14th - 16th November
According to Thai Anxiety
http://www.pattayagogos.com/nlne0808.htm#Dry_Tears
The whole of Thailand is going into mourning for the kings late sister.
The bars are going to be closed in the middle of my next proposed Trip.
Any news? Is it going to be a “lights off drinking from coffee cups” shut down or are they going to really enforce it.

Hi Monty, wish I could be more helpful, but we won't really know thw situation until the day before (or even the day) of the proposed closure.
I know - in the UK they give you months - years notice of bank holidays etc - but then ... don't you just love Thailand?
Be assured - if anyone is open - we will be!
Anyway - why are you worried .... get yourself a couple of girls from Hell and bunker down for some really dirty sex!

" dirty sex peter " !!!Hi All,
I can understand Montys concerns , but the way I see it is only fair to the royal family in shutting the country down as royal traditions must be upheld . I say this because as Monty points out the closure dates are 14 -16 November ( QUOTED DATES SO FAR ) , I will be arriving on the sunday 16 th of November and I would like to see all the repect paid to the royal family whilst I am In England , so basically I am in favour of shutting down everything ........... until I get there !!! .
I am also shocked and dismayed Peter to hear what advice you gave to Monty about toughing it out with several ladies , I basically think that you have got Monty all wrong , he is not like the rest of the guys who comes to Pattaya .......... he only comes for the culture . I remember the last time we were in Pattaya together , he would spend all day at the " big Buddha " taking photos and
etchings . Has for me Peter I am not really concerned about it as once I arrive ( if I ) , I will just phone out for a " take away " !!!!!!! .

ApologiesGentlemen, I stand suitably rebuked.
There will be many opportunities to watch the many and various ceremonies which will undoubtedly be held all across the Kingdom.
Please remember that these will be to mark the death of the King's sister and we must approach any discussion on this very carefully and with respect.

respectHi Peter ,
Yes , you are right , we can joke and make fun about somethings , but lets not take this too far , as afterall a well respected member of the Thai household as passed away.
I am pleased for only one reason and that is that Monty raised the subject now , at least I will have an heads up once I get there ( if dates don`t change ) . I know I take the piss a lot ....... but that`s as far as I am prepared to go on this subject . If you hear anything regarding this Peter , would you post it a.s.a.p ( I know you will ) .

UpdateIf any of you are planning to be here in November - it does look as if the Funeral Celebration will be worth trying to get to:
"Accompanied to heaven by the performances she loved
The cremation ceremony of Princess Galyani will be a celebration of her life and her passion for the arts,
Anchalee Kongrut
During her lifetime, Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana was a keen patron of the Thai arts and harboured a great love of western classical music.
Her sponsorships, scholarships and sheer enjoyment of the arts have left a legacy that will flow on down the years. So it is fitting that all of the arts she loved so much in life should play a big role in her funeral and cremation ceremony in November.
In particular, it will be the first time that western classical music, which she adored, will be played at a Thai royal funeral and cremation.
The Vie Trio will bid farewell to Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana at the royal crematorium in November.
And playing the music will be some of those whom she encouraged to study and learn classical instruments.
As Her Royal Highness ascends to heaven, she will accompanied by the music and art of the best artists Thailand has to offer.
Normally in Asian culture, including in Thailand, funerals and cremations are solemn affairs with room for moments of joy and pleasure to help grieving friends and relatives balance their sadness at the loss of a loved one.
For the farewell to the beloved Princess, known for her love of Thai arts and culture in its purest forms, there will be likay, which often combines popular drama with humour and joy.
Upscale performances of khon Thai masked dancing and nang yai, the shadow puppet show that has thrilled children for centuries and lakhon nok, the play performed by all-female casts and marionettes, will be showcased during the royal cremation.
This tradition of classic Thai cultural performances dates back over 600 years to the early Ayutthaya period.
The commemoration has been toned down since the reign of King Rama V and was almost completely phased out by King Rama VI, who believed that funerals should be characterised by understated grief.
This low-key approach to royal funerals continued even for the high-profile royal cremation of Queen Rambhai Barni in 1985.But funeral entertainment was restored in the last royal cremation - that of the Princess Mother over a decade ago.
Fine Arts Department director-general Kriengkrai Sampatchalit said the performances for the funeral ceremony for Her Royal Highness, which begins on Nov 15, will be "full scale" and "unprecedented".
Western classical music, which was her favourite, will be performed at night.
The department is planning to build three stages at Sanam Luang to accommodate the performances.
The northern stage opposite the royal crematorium will host the khon and nang yai performances.
The acts will start at 7pm and carry on through until dawn on Nov 16, with a break from 9pm to 10.30pm, when His Majesty the King will proceed with the royal cremation.
Both khon and nang yai performances will include episodes from the Ramayana, the ancient Hindu epic.
The Ramayana is often chosen for royal events, as it depicts the reincarnation of Phra Narai, a Hindu god who becomes mankind's saviour. The theme reflects the belief in which the birth of the God-king occurs, a tenet from which Thailand's monarchy originated.
The western stage in front of Thammasat University will have the Fine Arts Department's marionettes, lakhon nok and the award-winning Joe Louis Puppet Theatre, which was under the late Princess's patronage.
The troupe will perform her favourite "Legend of Phra Rahu", featuring the ancient Hindu version about the birth of the lunar eclipse.
Pisutr Yankheisod, of the Joe Louis Puppet Theatre, said he was speechless when asked to play at the royal cremation ceremony.
"It is our utmost honour to be a part of this piece of history. It is beyond words to describe how a puppet troupe from the grassroots like us has been invited to participate in a royal court ritual," he said.
On the eastern stage, western classical music will be performed by the department's orchestra, the Chulalongkorn University orchestra and the Thai Youth Orchestra, which was also under Princess Galyani's patronage.
Musicians confirmed so far include the Srinarong family's famed Vie Trio.
Two of the siblings received scholarships from Princess Galyani while the youngest, Sunida, is head of the Thai Youth Orchestra. The trio do not know the list of songs they will be playing.
"The music on that night must be joyous and came from the works of French composers," said Uthaisri Srinarong, 26, who received a scholarship from Her Royal Highness to study cello at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
"This is a very high profile event for us and we will do our best to pay tribute to the late princess," Ms Uthaisri said, adding the family will be "eternally grateful" to her.
Mr Kriengkrai said the cremation ceremony will symbolise the country's ancient beliefs about death and the relationship between monarchs and their subjects.
"These performances are there to make us happy on that day. We have to understand that this royal ceremony is not a sad ritual," he said.
According to Hindu belief, a royal cremation is the final rite of passage for god to return to Phra Sumane Mount, or heaven.
The royal crematorium chariot, now under construction, is designed to resemble Phra Sumane.
"So on this day, we will hold a farewell ceremony for the late princess. We will be there to pay the last tribute as she returns to heaven, and that is not a sad event," Mr Kriengkrai said. "

Trouble will be getting there (Bangkok) and being able to see anything ..... hum .. feel a new lens coming on ... donations please to the Pay Pal account!

Thailand in TurmoilI just logged on so that I may have my say on things.
I am an EVA Airways captain that just had his Taipei-Bangkok flight cancelled due to BKK airport closed to inbound flights.
I laugh at the bunch of "2 week millionaires" that post here that have no clue to the reality of life. Things are falling apart there, coupled with the world economic scene, your postees are living the imaginary Thai dream life, with no sign of reality. I will not post here again, or view this sight for that matter.
Get a life everyone.

I can well understand the frustration that this guy obviously feels, how would you feel if you had been looking forward to night on Soi Cowboy and suddenly your flight gets cancelled!
But again, hear it first hand. I've just spent two nights in Bangkok - looking at the Princess Galliani exhibition and her crematorium. Beautiful and very touching.
So I was travelling around from Nana to the Royal Palace, riverboat to Stephan Taxin - skytrain, metro, Siam Paragon.
I had two very raunchy nights on Soi Cowboy .
I drove home on the Trat/Chonburi Highway.
I didn't wear a yellow or red shirt.
I had a great mini break.
Thailand is politically in Chaos - but life goes on and I'm enjoying it!
Yes, we are all angry and sad about the closure of the Airport - it will massively inconvenience important customers - who will think twice about coming here again.
It also creates an atmosphere that will put off investors.
But lets put it in context. How many European Baggage Handler strikes occur annually?
Postal worker's strikes?
Petrol Tanker Driver strikes?
Dock workers?
As the Thais would say... "Jai yin"

Yo, Pete... I can not fully agree with you this time, because a postal workers´strike isn´t the same like a nationwide political crisis.
I still have my concerns... not for me as a traveller, but for Thailand and the Thai people.
Hope all this will come to a peaceful end soon.
The present situation would not hold me back from going on travel, if I would be booked on a flight in the next few days.
I´ve just heard in the news, that several German airlines have canceled all their flights to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi... and that some travel agencies have canceled their Thailand package tour programs till this crisis is over.
So, I´m still looking forward to my next trip in March... I´m booked on a scheduled Thai Airways flight... and I think they will definitely fly, whilst Krautish Airways will not.
